Academic Enhancement Programs
Reading Road is available for students who need extra help in acquiring and mastering reading skills. To meet the needs of these students, Desert Christian Schools offers READING ROAD, small group remedial reading instruction. For students with specific weakness in phonemic awareness and decoding, LiPS (Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program) is recommended. All classes meet according to the school calendar.
Reading Road offers:
- Small group instruction (usually 2 to 5 students), grouped by grade or ability level
- 1 ½ to 2 hours of instruction per week (depending on group size), October through May
- Individualized instruction available (1 hour per week) if no Reading Road group is available
LiPS offers:
- Individualized instruction (2 hours per week)
- Enrollment throughout the year as long as openings exist
The SEARCH & TEACH© Program is an early intervention program developed to meet the educational needs of young learners before they experience the frustration of learning failure. SEARCH is a 20-minute individual test designed to identify 5 and 6-year-olds who are vulnerable to learning difficulty, and to provide profiles of individual strengths and weaknesses in the readiness skills necessary for reading success. TEACH is a program of learning activities carefully designed to address the needs revealed by SEARCH. Teach is a pull out program in which the Teach therapist works one-on-one with each child for 30 minutes twice each week using an individually prescribed plan of therapy. Since 1980, SEARCH & TEACH is cited in the US Office of Education publication Educational Programs That Work. www.searchandteach.com
The Discovery Program is aimed at serving students of
average to superior ability who exhibit significant difficulties in acquiring listening, speaking, reading, handwriting, spelling, reasoning, or mathematical skills. The philosophy in working with students in Discovery is based upon stimulating areas which are deficient in perceiving and processing information. Rather than learning compensatory techniques, students receive individual, intense educational therapy. This therapeutic intervention approach is designed to
improve academic performance. The goal for the student in Discovery is
independent functioning at grade level. To accomplish this goal, techniques have been designed to improve perception, cognition, and basic skills. Discovery is a pull-out program, in which the educational therapist works one-on-one with each child for 80 minutes twice each week using an individually prescribed plan of therapy. Our educational therapists are trained and certified through the National Institute for Learning Development (NILD). The Discovery Program is also known as NILD Education Therapy®. Many of the techniques used in NILD Educational Therapy were written by the authors of the SERCH & TEACH Program.
