Desert Christian Home Education
Program is designed for (and by) homeschoolers and offers record
keeping, support, encouragement, and cooperative activities. Its
purpose is to encourage and support families who have chosen a
home based education, and who seek the benefits a large private
school can offer. Though the focus of DCHEP is on couples as co-teachers
of their children, we now serve single parents.
Our
Philosophy of Home Education
- We believe that God ordained the family
as the primary social unit to produce children who are wise
and useful in His kingdom.
- We believe that the primary relationship
in the home is the marriage.
- We believe that the fathers have the responsibility
to bring up their children in the wisdom and instruction of
the Lord.
- We believe that each mother is responsible
to love and nurture her children toward godliness.
- We believe that God always couples responsibility
with authority, and therefore, we alone are responsible for
disciplining our children.
- We believe that God is the author of all
truth, and the Bible should be the foundation and center of
education.
- We believe that regular evaluation and
accountability with other believers is an integral part of
home education.
- We believe that the parents are responsible
for the oversight of both the academic and spiritual education
of their own children.
Our
History
In 1991, Pat and Jill Tanner approached
Desert Christian Schools with a plan in mind for a ministry to
homeschoolers. Desert Christian Home Education Program (DCHEP)
began that fall as a pilot program opening its library, media
resources, music, and sports programs to homeschoolers who desired
to network with other families who would emphasize father involvement.
Support groups began meeting monthly.
Each year we grow and change to
reflect the leadership of the group involved and seek to meet
the needs of the membership for that year. The ministry is still
focused on father involvement; however, it now includes service
and support to single parents.
The
Program
The DCHEP Program is available
to those families who desire to network with like-minded homeschoolers.
This option offers maximum support and maximum accountability,
such as:
- Support and accountability groups
for each member
- Involvement in Associated Christian Schools
International (ACSI) events
- Participation in sports and music programs
at Desert Christian Middle School and Desert Christian High
School.
- Enrichment programs at Desert Christian
Schools, such as Discovery, Dance, Cheer and Gymnastics
- Cooperatively planned field trips, activities
and classes
- Full access to the Media Resource Center
and Library, including our own Homeschool Resource Section
- Continuing education opportunities through
Support Events
- Stanford Achievement Test administration
for 2-12 grades with other homeschool students
- Full recordkeeping service (trimester
for K-8)
- Full transcript service (semesters for

Both parents (or the single parent)
are responsible to:

- DCS' administration of the Stanford Achievement
tests during campus school’s Easter vacation for 2-12
grades with other homeschool students
