The purpose of Desert
Middle School is to help parents in meeting their God
given responsibility of training their children to love
God and others by providing an atmosphere in which students
can achieve their highest potential mentally, spiritually,
emotionally and physically.
It is the desire of the staff to provide
middle school students with an abundance of quality acceptance,
encouragement and direction at this crucial time of their
life.
A strong focus is placed on academics
with emphasis given to core subjects of Bible, English,
Math, History and Science. Electives include Spanish, Computer,
Musical Drama and Yearbook. Opportunities to participate
in Band and Interscholastic Sports help in providing a well-rounded
educational experience.
Spiritual Emphasis and Student Activities
Spiritual emphasis and student activities
at Desert Christian Middle School provide opportunities
for students to practice and use the values they learn in
class.
Our goal is to:
1) Create and preserve an environment
where students can honor God freely.
- We respect the students' right to
choose for themselves to follow God, an essential element
to healthy decisions for both the seeking student and
the student who has already chosen a relationship with
Christ.
- We manage the expression of ungodly
attitudes and behavior so all students can feel free to
follow God wholeheartedly without pressure or disrespect
from others.
2) Provide opportunities to supplement
personal growth.
- Student activities, both spiritual
and social, can boost normal spiritual growth by providing
fresh new encounters that stretch, enlighten or expand
the experience of a student relating to his/her spiritual
surroundings.
3) Model godly examples students aspire
to.
- As adolescent students explore their
independence from adult and parent figures, one of the
best contributions adults can make is to be godly role
models serving as representatives of Christ and Christian
values.
4) Nourish a mood of loving and being
loved by God.
- A positive atmosphere that showcases
God's love in structure, decisions, and relationships
is fertile ground for development of healthy Christian
young people.
Chapels
Each week our students participate
in a dynamic chapel service designed to encourage worship
and spiritual growth among our students. Contemporary
praise music, effective speakers and scriptural messages
on relevant themes highlight our chapel services. Students
are involved in the band, worship team, tech team, and
as chapel leaders.
Field Trips
In addition to occasional day long
academic field trips, sixth graders participate in an
outdoor education program known as Alpine Adventure.
Seventh graders spend a day at Medieval Times in conjuction with world history studies and travel to
San Diego for a three-day spiritual emphasis trip which
includes an overnight stay at Sea World. Eight
graders enjoy a fall campout and a spring trip to Catalina
Island.
Access
Achievement Centered Challenge Events
for Successful Students (A.C.C.E.S.S.) are special events
planned for high-achieving students that extend the learning
experience at DCMS. The individual trips build student
interest in academic exploration and give to students
a reason to reach higher yet in their learning. Recent
trips include the J. Paul Getty Museum and NASA's
Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Leadership Club
Our Leadership Club is available
to qualifying eighth grade students seeking to develop
their leadership skills. Following attendance at
a regional conference in the fall, these students provide
valuable student leadership in planning and implementing
student activities throughout the year.
Activities
Interesting social activities are scheduled
from time to time, each designed to enhance and enrich
the social lives of our middle school students.
